Who is Santa Lucia?

The Story of St. Lucia

The Festival of St. Lucia, celebrated on December 13, begins the Christmas season in Swedish custom. The tradition stems from the 4th Century martyrdom of an Italian saint and the incidents which followed. Lucia, which means "light," was born to a noble and prosperous family in Sicily. Her father died when she was young, so Lucia was raised by her mother in the Christian tradition.

When Lucia was a young woman her mother became very ill; they     offered prayers at the tomb of St. Agatha and Lucia vowed that if her  mother was healed she would devote her life to God. Lucia’s mother was healed and Lucia revealed her promised vow to her mother. She was so touched that she agreed to give Lucia her inheritance, which Lucia gave to the poor. Upset with his loss of love and dowry, Lucia’s suitor reported her to the government as being a witch and helping the Christians. Lucia was called before a judge and killed because she refused to renounce her Christian faith. At 20 years old, Lucia became a martyr with accounts of miracles following.

According to Swedish legend, after her death a ship carrying a maiden "clothed in white and crowned with light" appeared on the shore in the Swedish province of Varmland during a great famine. The maiden, believed to be Lucia, distributed food and clothing to the needy, thus endearing herself to the Swedish people. St. Lucia is celebrated throughout the world; in Sweden, Lucia symbolizes the cominend of the long winter nights and the return of light to the world.

While December 13 is the Day of Santa Lucia, we celebrate the Day on the nearest to Sunday with the whole congregation- Swedish or otherwise!

In both 2022 and 2023, John & Mary Carlson's granddaughter / Lars & Crystal's daughter Heidi played the role of St. Lucia, handing out her goodies to the congregation while little brother Axel played Star Boy and looked on his big sister's important role.

In 2024, John & Mary Carlson's granddaughter / Corrine & Marcus' daughter Remi played the role of St. Lucia, handing out her goodies to the congregation. Remi's little brother Sterling was only 6 months old at 2024's celebration, but he may grow up to also play the role of Star Boy one year...

This little cutie won our hearts over! Remi proudly wore the lighted crown of candles (battery-operated!) while Mom Corinne and Grandma Mary helped her share her cookies with all the congregation...

Do you think Remi’s little brother Sterling might one day be our Star Boy?
